There are two main methods of whitening teeth; at-home bleaching or in-office bleaching. In-office bleaching uses gels very similar to the at-home bleaching approach, but is faster because intense light from an argon laser is used. However, we don’t offer this particular service because everyday activities like drinking coffee or tea or eating blueberries can quickly degrade the effects of an in-office treatment.
Instead we opt for a program that allows you to control your whitening process at home. We make a custom-made tray that fits exactly to your teeth and holds a viscous, high quality whitening gel. The gel contains no ingredients like fluoride or glycerin that can dry out your gums and cause sensitivity. The whitening kit also contains MI Paste, a remineralizing paste that can prevent sensitivity.
There is also a blue/red light to fit over the trays. The blue light accelerates the whitening and the red light soothes your gums. Straws are included because you don’t want to be drinking coffee when your teeth are porous due to the whitening gel! A shade guide, remineralizing toothpaste and Xylitol drops are also included.
This technique will get your teeth just as white as the office bleaching. Most patients notice a change within one day, but final results usually take about ten days to two weeks, depending on how often you are able to apply the gel and the light device.
